In recent times ‘biriyani’ has become one of the common food of many people especially the rich, the middle class, even the down-trodden people like daily wage laborers, student communities and even the rural folk. People have a predilection for biriyani, for they are rich in calorie content, comparatively cheaper, tasty, less time-consuming to finish it off, makes lunch a simple affair, not involving any sophistication of cleaning etc. Of late with the current trend of price rise of essential commodities, the food grains and the pulses, the high rate of inflation, as high as 7.41, with a recent marginal nose-dive, hitherto unheard of, has got its own ramifications in many fields especially, the food sector. The biriyani, the favourite food of many and of course a staple food of a significant number of people, has become dearer.
In Chennai, the soaring price rise and inflation, has made the biriyani lovers, quench their desire and tighten their money belts. With the prices of oil, chicken, mutton, spices and rice, skyrocketing in the last few weeks, popular biriyani stalls in Chennai have been forced to raise the price of biriyani as much as 40 %.Number of restaurants have revised their rates. If the present trend continues, the price rise would even soar to Rs 100/- forcing many biriyani lovers stop eating biriyani and switch over to some other items of staple foods.
In the last few months, the cost of all the essential commodities like spices, mutton, chicken, eggs, rice and the edible oil etc have doubled. Knowing pretty well, the price rise of biriyani will affect their customers, the biriyani sellers have no option but to ensure profits for their own survival.
Besides, the price rise of gingelly oil from Rs 80/- per litre to Rs 140/- in the last three months, 25 % hike in the groundnet oil,the price rise of refined oil from Rs 60/- to Rs 80/-, the price rise of Basmati rice by Rs 20/ – in the last two months, have forced the biriyani stalls naturally forced them to increase the price.
