A study has said women feel threatened when in a group out numbered by the opposite sex, such as in mathematics, science and engineering class rooms, while men take pleasure in being in a class full of women. “Walking into a situation in which you sense the possibility of being ostracized or isolated can be quite threatening”, said the study, which appeared at the effect of so called situational cues, such as being outnumbered, on women’s performance in mathematics, science and engineering courses.
The study led by Mary Murphy, a psychologist at the Stanford University, California said, this kind of attention allocation would interfere with performance and might help to explain the performance gap between men and women in these fields.
